It seems like I need a list for everything as a new parent and the diaper bag essentials list is no exception. Being a new Mother can be a bit dazing at times. lol. Being prepared can be a real day saver sometimes. Avoiding accidents and being well stocked with supplies when they do happen is the key to packing a diaper bag. This list will help you pack your diaper bag full of the essentials but really it's up to you to remember to re-stock. =D

  1. Baby Wipes - I always pack two full packs of baby wipes in my diaper bag. I find my self using them for just about everything. Cleaning up messes, cleaning my hands, I've even used them for cleaning up sticky spills.
  2. Diapers - This one is pretty obvious but the real question is how many you should pack. It really depends on how long you plan to be away from home. For all day trips I pack as many as will fit in my bag. The trouble is even if you know your babies go time schedule you may have other issues. Tabs brake and pull off and babies can get upset tummies. It's just better to over pack diapers, trust me!
  3. Diaper Cream - I often get diaper cream in free baby samples by mail. These are great for tucking away in your diaper bag.
  4. Antibacterial cream/gel - I like to use the cream it doesn't dry out my hands as much. Be sure to have friends and family members use a bit before touching baby!
  5. Burp Cloths - I try to keep five of these in my diaper bag but somehow I always wind up with only three. lol.
  6. Changing pad - Easy to clean on the run changing pads can be hard to find but if you find a good one buy two!
  7. Plastic Bags - Sometimes you'll need to store soiled clothing for a while. Having a plastic bag or zip-lock bag is great for this and can cut down on smell as well as cleaning time.
  8. Extra Set of Clothing - You may want to think about packing 2 or 3 changes of clothing for long day trips.
  9. Feeding Supplies - This could be a whole list on it's own. Baby bottles, bottle nipples, baby food, formula, water, spoons, and of coarse more wipes!
  10. Basic infant first aid kit - This should include some free samples baby Tylenol or aspirin.
  11. Toys & Pacifiers - Keep something around for baby to do! It might just save you on that phone call from the boss and baby is screaming!
  12. Blankets - You'll need those to protect your little one from sudden winds and storms.

I hope you have found this Diaper Bag Essentials List to be pretty complete. If anyone has anything to add please leave a comment below!

Haha, I was just looking for this one. Thanks for this! My sis and sis-in-law are giving birth early next year and I'm just so excited that I'm already planning to give them a baby bag filled with some useful stuff. Thanks for this again :)

This is a comprehensive list. As a nursery teacher at church, I often laugh at the contents of diaper bags (e.g. 6 changes of clothes but no diapers?)I recommend the large bag you describe plus a smaller bag with just enough for a 2-hour Bible class or workout session. The classroom gets crowded with those huge bags!

Hi, lol I remember it well! I sometimes felt that I would need two pushchairs, one for my son, and the other for all the bits and pieces, great list, and it will be really helpful, cheers nell

Have to disagree with the diaper cream. Despite being "medicinal", it made my kids' diaper rash WORSE because it prevented good ol' air from getting to the affected area. Same with my grandson last year. After wiping baby's bottom, baby powder works FAR better to prevent or cure diaper rash, because it not only allows air to circulate, it absorbs the moisture that d.r. needs to take hold in the first place. Same principle as why we no longer smear butter on a burn.

@luisj305, if you think the list for the diaper bag is long, wait until you find out how much *absolutely essential* equipment one has to haul around to service a newborn! lol!

I should have explained better @JamaGennee. Diaper cream is actually better at preventing diaper rash rather than treating it. With messy BMs where there is a lot of wiping involved and the area is not already red, I use just a dab of diaper cream. You are absolutely right about baby powder though. When I get home I will update the hub to include it. Thanks for the thought!
