It is a a proton pump inhibitor to treat peptic ulcers , gastro esophageal reflux diseases called GERD/GORD's or zollinger -ellison syndrome.
It was first marketed by AstraZeneca as magnesium salt omeprazole magnesium under the trade names Losec and Prilosec, and is now also available from generic manufacturers under various trade names.
It is a tri coordinated sulfur atom in a pyramidal structure which can exist in S and R enantiomer. AstraZeneca markets Omeprazole as Losec, Antra, Gastroloc, Mopral, Omepral, and Prilosec.
It has a chemical formula C17H19N3O3S .It has a bioavailability of 35-76% and it metabolizes in hepatic region.
Having a half life of around 1 hour, it is excreted 80% through renal matter and rest by faceal matter.


Clinical use
Omeprazole is available as tablets and capsules in strength of 10 mg, 20 mg, 40 mg and as a powder (Omeprazole sodium) for intravenous injection. Oral Omeprazole preparations are enteric-coated.

Use in Helicobacter pylori eradication
Omeprazole is combined with the antibiotics clarithromycin and amoxicillin in eradication of H.Pylori

Omeprazole may cause side effects. Consult your doctor:

1. Diarrhea
2. Constipation
3. Dizziness
4. Cough
5. Pain

PRECAUTIONS
Before taking Omeprazole,

1.Consult your doctor if you are allergic to Omeprazole.

2. Be sure to mention this to your doctor if you take any of the following: ampicillin ; anticoagulants ; atazanavir ; cyclosporine ; clopidogrel ; digoxin ,disulfiram ; ketoconazole ; medications for anxiety and seizures; phenytoin ; sedatives; tranquilizers; and vitamins or supplements containing iron and antacids or calcium supplements.
3. Tell your doctor if you have low levels of calcium or potassium in your blood or excessive vomiting.

4. Consult doctor if you had heart burns or chest pain within three months of taking it.

5. Consult your doctor if you have or have ever had liver disease.
